Request for Airbnb to create a Green Filter

Dear Airbnb,

As users of your services and hosts of your accommodations, we would like Airbnb to consider adding a Green Filter to your accommodations search function.

A Green Filter would allow hosts to promote and users to find properties with eco-friendly features such as: powered by clean energy, using toxin-free cleaning products, reducing single use plastic via reusable personal care products, cleaning products, and kitchen storage options, carbon neutrality, providing recycling and composting options, green linens and towels, or including Energy Star Appliances, among others.

This addition to your accommodations search would:

  • Help highlight the hosts that are investing in greening up their homes.
  • Resonate with your guest community who are interested in sustainable travel.
  • Raise awareness and visibility for environmentally friendly actions.

Many travelers are seeking more sustainable travel options. In fact, 70% of global travelers would be more likely to book an accommodation knowing it was eco-friendly, but only 50% tell us there’s enough choice when it comes to places to stay and 38% are not even sure where to look for sustainable accommodations. Global travelers cite many barriers to making sustainable travel choices, including lack of knowledge of sustainable options. 45% of travelers wish that online booking sites offered sustainable or eco-friendly filter options.

As our world feels the effects of climate change, from worsening winter storms, hurricanes, typhoons, tornados, wildfires and droughts, to the millions of tons of plastic and waste that are filling our landfills and oceans, to the environmental injustice and pollution inflicted on low income neighborhoods and communities of color, we are all looking for actions we can take in our own lives. If we’ve learned anything over the past year, it’s that when we work together, we can accomplish almost anything.

We believe that Airbnb can help people take positive action by including a Green Filter to encourage hosts to address climate change and other environmental justice issues from the personal space of their very own homes — and simultaneously give guests the chance to do good while enjoying great travel and leisure adventures.

Thank you for your consideration,

Lindsey McCoy, Plaine Products, United States, Airbnb User
